What is a good death?

A good death is one that reflects a person’s values and wishes. It is a death free from unnecessary, costly and invasive treatments. And it is a death that does not increase the individual or their loved one’s potential for additional stress and prolonged grief. Or lead to family breakdowns and/or trauma.

To ensure every Australian receives a good death, we must increase public awareness of:

  • End-of-life care
  • Advance care planning
  • Dignity of risk and the choices within

Death literacy matters

Tiptoeing around end-of-life increases fear and the potential for death to have a traumatic impact on our lives. If we get better at having open and honest conversations about end-of-life options, we can:

  • Improve end-of-life outcomes
  • Reduce the trauma experienced by loved ones
  • Create a more inclusive end-of-life experience
